Veranda, Balcony, Guaranteed Cabin… Why Cruise Rooms Are More Complicated Than People Think

One of the most common things I hear from clients is:

“We just want a veranda.”

And honestly? I completely understand why people say that.

Most travelers assume a veranda cabin is simple:

  • You get a room

  • You get a balcony

  • Done.

But the reality is, cruise cabins are far more detailed than most people realize—and that’s exactly where working with the right travel advisor matters.

Not All Verandas Are the Same

Here’s something many first-time cruisers don’t know:

There isn’t just one type of veranda cabin.

Depending on the cruise line and ship, there can be:

  • Standard verandas

  • Infinite verandas

  • Sunset verandas

  • Deluxe verandas

  • Concierge-class verandas

  • Partial-view balconies

  • Obstructed-view balconies

  • Guaranteed balcony cabins

And every cruise line names and organizes them differently.

Celebrity Cruises Is a Perfect Example

Recently, I’ve been working on bookings with Celebrity Cruises, and this is where people really start realizing how detailed cruise cabins can get.

On Celebrity ships, you’ll see cabin categories like:

  • V1

  • V2

  • V3

  • DV

  • C1

  • C2

  • C3

  • C4

  • Sunset Veranda

To someone new to cruising, that can look completely confusing.

But each category means something different:

  • Different deck locations

  • Different views

  • Different perks

  • Different cabin positions on the ship

  • Different overall experiences

Two cabins may both technically be “verandas,” but one may offer a significantly better experience depending on the traveler.

Every Cruise Ship Is Built Differently

This is another important detail people don’t realize.

Every cruise line has different ship classes, layouts, and cabin designs.

A veranda on one ship may feel completely different on another.

For example:

  • One balcony may have wide-open ocean views

  • Another may overlook lifeboats

  • One may feel private and quiet

  • Another may sit directly above a loud entertainment venue

That’s why simply choosing “a balcony room” isn’t always enough.

What Is a Guaranteed Cabin?

A guaranteed cabin can sometimes sound attractive because the pricing may be lower.

But there’s a catch.

With a guaranteed cabin:

  • You choose the category

  • The cruise line assigns the exact cabin later

That means:

  • You may not control the location

  • Your view could be partially obstructed

  • You could end up near noisy areas

For some travelers, it’s a great value.

For others, location matters too much to leave it up to chance.

Partial View vs Ocean View vs Veranda

Cruise terminology matters more than people think.

Partial View

You can still see the ocean, but part of the view is blocked by:

  • Lifeboats

  • Ship structures

  • Equipment

Ocean View

You get a window—but usually no private outdoor space.

Veranda / Balcony

You get:

  • Your own outdoor seating area

  • Fresh air

  • Private ocean views

But again—not all balconies are created equal.

Why Cabin Location Matters

Sometimes location matters just as much as the room itself.

Questions I help clients think through include:

  • Are you sensitive to motion?

  • Do you prefer quiet areas?

  • Do you want quick elevator access?

  • Are you early sleepers?

  • Do you value privacy?

These details can completely shape the cruise experience.

This Is Where a Travel Advisor Makes a Difference

Booking engines usually only show:

  • A price

  • A category code

  • A few generic pictures

But they don’t explain:

  • Which decks are noisy

  • Which verandas have better views

  • Which cabins experienced cruisers avoid

  • Which categories offer the best value

That’s where experience matters.

Sometimes spending slightly more creates a dramatically better vacation.

And sometimes the cheapest balcony ends up being the most disappointing one onboard.

The Goal Isn’t Just Booking a Cabin

The goal is booking the right cabin for your travel style.

Because there’s a big difference between:

“We booked a balcony.”

and

“We booked the perfect balcony for us.”

Final Thoughts

Cruise cabins are far more detailed than most travelers realize.

So when someone says:

“We just want a veranda,”

my first thought is always:

“Okay… let’s make sure it’s the right one.”

That’s the difference between simply booking a cruise and actually planning the right experience.
