How to Choose the Right Alaska Cruise Line for Your Trip (According to a Travel Advisor)
When people ask me, "What's the best Alaska cruise line?" my answer is almost always the same:
It depends.

Generally speaking, I tend to think about them like this:

Royal Caribbean – Excellent for families and travelers who enjoy plenty of onboard activities.
Celebrity Cruises – A more refined experience with elevated dining and service.
Norwegian Cruise Line – Great for travelers who enjoy flexibility and Freestyle Cruising.
Princess Cruises – One of my favorite recommendations for Alaska because of its long history sailing the region and its excellent Alaska-focused itineraries.
Holland America Line – A wonderful option for travelers looking for a quieter, more upscale experience.
These aren't hard rules. Every traveler is different, and promotions can change the value each cruise line offers. My job is to match you with the cruise line that fits your vacation, not someone else's.
If I Had to Pick Just One...
If someone stopped me and said,
"Eric, don't ask me any questions. Just tell me which Alaska cruise line to book."
I'd probably recommend Princess Cruises.
Why?
Princess has spent decades building its Alaska program. It offers excellent itineraries, a more upscale atmosphere, and some of the best cruisetour options available. For many travelers, it delivers the Alaska experience they're dreaming about.
That doesn't mean it's right for everyone. Families with young children or travelers looking for waterslides, surf simulators, and nonstop activities might be happier on another cruise line.
That's why I believe choosing the right cruise line starts with understanding the traveler.
The Biggest Mistakes I See Travelers Make
1. Choosing Based Only on Price
Everyone loves a deal.
But Alaska isn't the destination where I'd recommend choosing the cheapest cruise without looking at what's included.
A slightly higher-priced cruise could offer a better itinerary, better service, or a better overall experience.
Sometimes spending a little more creates memories you'll never forget.
2. Skipping the Cruisetour
If your schedule and budget allow it, I almost always recommend considering a cruisetour.
A cruisetour lets you experience much more of Alaska than a cruise alone. Instead of only seeing the coastline, you'll have the opportunity to explore inland areas and experience another side of the state.
For many travelers, that's what turns a great vacation into an unforgettable one.
3. Not Thinking About the Best Time to Visit
The month you travel can completely change your Alaska experience.
Personally, I often recommend June for travelers who hope to maximize wildlife viewing while enjoying long daylight hours.
Every month has its advantages, which is why I always discuss travel dates before recommending an itinerary.
